OzManouche 2020 – 25th-27th November at the Brisbane Jazz Club
Australia’s first and only Festival of Jazz Manouche, the music of Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli, is on once again at the Brisbane Jazz Club over the last weekend of November.
OzManouche began in 2020 as the brainchild of Ewan MacKenzie, a local Brisbane guitarist, who travelled to Paris in 2020 for the annual Festival du Django Reinhardt and was inspired to create a similar event in Australia. “I’d made contact during the previous few years with other Djangophiles in Melbourne and Sydney, and had done some gigs with Ian Date, possibly the first Australian guitarist to master the Django style. So it was a matter of pulling the loose ends together and talking everyone into coming up to Brisbane!”
With the assistance of the Brisbane Jazz Club and Remco Mayer of Crossroads Guitars, OzManouche was launched in 2020 and was a huge success. Devotees of Gypsy Jazz came from near and far to play, listen, attend workshops and sit out on the beautiful deck of the Jazz Club and jam together for three day and nights.
Each year since then OzManouche has been a Mecca for Australian Gypsy Jazz fans and musicians. Ian Date has assumed the mantle of Festival Patron, and Ewan is its Artistic Director. Musicians to have graced the stage at OzManouche include the legendary Hank Marvin of the Shadows, Django’s grand-nephew Lulo Reinhardt, brilliant Amsterdam-based guitarist and teacher Robin Nolan, Frenchman Michel Trabelsi from New Caledonia, as well as numerous Australian artists such as Daniel Weltlinger, Duck Musique, Belle Musette, Mystery Pacific and Laique.
For the sixth festival, Ewan has invited world-renowned Swedish guitarist Andreas Oberg to headline on Saturday night 26th November, and give master classes over the weekend. Christchurch duo La Petite Manouche (the little gypsies) are making their way across the ditch, father and son Roma gypsy duo Latcho Roma will be here, Ian and Nigel Date are coming from Ireland via Sydney, Swing Manouche, Cameron Ford and Laique make up the Brisbane contingent and La Mauvaise Reputation make their first visit from Melbourne.
“This will be a great festival – people are really looking forward to Andreas coming, and the playing is going to be non-stop!” says Ewan.
Concerts will be held Friday, Saturday and Sunday night as well as Sunday brunch. During the day there’ll be films, instrument displays and jamming and master classes. Daytime entry is free except for master classes.
All bookings are through the Brisbane jazz Club website – www.brisbanejazzclub.com.au.
See you there!!
